| Photo by Paul Jeffrey (ACT) Background Though it had been used as a healthcare facility earlier, the Augusta Victoria Hospital (AVH) was established as a hospital after the war of 1948. For the first two years it was under the management of the International Committee of the Red Cross, then under the ownership and management of LWF. Since its establishment, AVH has served the medical needs of Palestinian refugees through a contract with UNRWA that continues to this day. Although AVH serves all in need, regardless of race, religion, nationality, gender, or ability to pay, the majority of patients seen at the hospital continue to be UNRWA referrals. (For more AVH history click here.) AVH provides many specialized services that are not easily accessible or that are unavailable in other hospitals in the occupied Palestinian Territories. These specialties include ear, nose and throat surgery; adult and pediatric nephrology; radiation oncology; allergy and immunology; pediatric neurology; and certain gastrointestinal procedures. The Cancer Center at AVH will be the first facility in the occupied Palestinian Territories to offer Radiation Oncology, and the only Radiation Oncology facility for East Jerusalem and the West Bank. No other medical facility in the occupied Palestinian Territories offers pediatric dialysis. Much of the treatment provided by the hospital is charity care. This is possible only through the donations and support of churches, organizations, and individuals. AVH Services General surgery
